ORIGINAL COMIC

El Goonish Shive! It’s sort of a furry/transgender fetish comic but while there’s clearly sexual elements, which are undeniable given one of the main characters constantly references his love for these things, it’s unexpectedly innocent. It’s a real oddity since when you’ve trawled through the sea of webcomics as much as I have you tend to expect most fetish-based comics to be nothing but flying dicks and gargantuan malformed breasts but in El Goonish Shive the sex stops at attraction, which is a relief given the subject matter.

The storylines consist of constant gender-swapping, transforming into animal forms/other people and unexplained fantasy yet the author, Dan Shive, tries to focus on the characters that all this crap is happening to. This doesn’t make it a good comic, it’s plots are cliche even with the bizarre overtones, but it does make it a surprising comic. There’s hints throughout that Dan Shive is trying to make something decent, the art improves over the years, the characters are consistently written and have some form of rudimentary development, hell there’s even attempts at having more than one camera angle for dramatic purposes! The major problem is Dan’s obvious obsessions. It’s like viewing the world through the third eye of a dickgirl. No matter what Shive ends up doing, no matter what improvements he endeavours to make there will still be a veil of perversion hanging over the comic making it unpalatable and making the author look crazy.

And it has the worst name of any webcomic ever.
