Inkdick is a journal comic which is, in all honesty, kinda dull. Pranas has developed an art style that works for him, it’s pleasantly cartoony and it seems like he gets the essence of the people he’s drawing (obviously not  knowing them, I can’t be sure). It’s just what he chooses to document often lacks anything interesting for outsiders and he often picks moments or subjects that make him come off as very whiny.

He seems to be missing what has made other journal-type comics, like the seminal American Splendor, work which is interesting/witty insights or additions which enhance the sequence, be they comedic or dramatic. I would suggest that he could improve by working with a writer, either to create entirely new material or to buff up Pranas’ ideas.

Kevin and Kell is one of the oldest webcomics, running from late 1995 without showing any signs of stopping. Overall it’s pretty harmless, just newspaper level comedy, and the dedication shown by Holbrook to run it for this long is very impressive. That said I’ve always had a question about the society he depicts. He shows a world of intelligent anthropomorphic Predators and Prey (the main divide in the world) that is full of sweetness and normality, a world that is often implied to be a lot better than our ‘human’ world and yet one of the title characters is a wolf who hunts down and slaughters other intelligent beings as her job! She brutally murders her fellow sentient creatures and comes home to a normal life of washing, cleaning and parenting, and this is presented entirely as a normal, happy occurrence.

I’ve never been able to reconcile the world and the atmosphere, which has resulted in the somewhat disturbed depiction of what MUST be happening offscreen!

I cannot stand Candi. It’s a boring comic and she is an terrible character; a horrifically whiny baby who believes she is the centre of the entire world. Over a year of the comic is spent on the hatred of a character who didn’t do anything wrong, but because Candi hates her everyone else is supposed to.

I started this comic way back before I went on hiatus, I got as far as the end of the second row and then couldn’t think how to make it funny. Returning to it I eventually thought of a way to end it, it just had to be quite epic.

This whole comic series was infuriatingly stupid. Ending with a “THESE ARE JUST EXTREMES” despite a horrible attitude throughout that demonstrates one utter extreme and another, obviously preferred ideal..

‘Modern Philosophies’ is a soapbox comic wherein the author draws a picture of his self-insert character and spouts his horrible opinions in cascade of words.

It’s barely a comic, it’s more of a Daily Mail style bigoted, hate-rant. It’s unpleasant.

I gotta give Kurtz kudos for the continual improvement of his artwork. He seemed to hit a point where he was coasting but in the last year or so really pushed the boat out and got better with his angles and designs. Even though I’ve done a fair few PVP edits, I don’t really dislike the comic, hell I was a fan for a long while when I was younger. I think that Scott Kurtz is a genuinely funny guy but I think that PVP has lost it’s spark, I’d love to see what he’d do with a more open comic where he wasn’t tied to the characters so strongly. Maybe a collaboration between him and KC Green would be a good project? I think they’d produce something pretty fantastic.

Linked in order of appearance above. Each of the the original shirts is terrible in their own way. The PVP shirt shows a delusional view of the importance of webcomics. The QC shirt is a stupid, hand-written typo that could be reproduced at home with a marker pen but instead people pay $17 to own it. The XKCD shirt is horribly drawn and the typeface is ugly beyond words, I can’t imagine why anyone would look at that and choose to wear it. Finally the Dresden Codak shirt is another example of his “People who like sports are dumb” attitude that has appeared in the main comic a few times.

All pretty bad, all expensive and all raking in the money for the creators. I wouldn’t have a problem with them if the shirts were better though, come on guys, take your shirts to the next level! Hire a graphic designer or something, those guys really know their stuff.

Boschen and Nesuko! It’s fucking horrible!

Seriously. This comic, and every other by Anelnoath, are disgusting. They’re badly-drawn, misogynistic nightmares filled with rape and murder. I really cannot think of a single thing that redeems any of them. I heartily recommend never reading any Anelnoath does, even as a joke, because there’s nothing to laugh at here, it’s just a downward slide.
